An extraordinary German Crucifix clockAn extraordinary German Crucifix clock The case mostly executed in gilt brass with silver parts and partly floral engraving. The wooden stand partly veneered with ebony. This finely chased clock uses a verge escapement and a strike mechanism with a silver-bronze chime. Through an ingenious mechanism, the movement in the base of the clock controls the time indicated on the globe atop the cross. This unique crucifix, which comes with a case, was used by the nobility and the prelate in the Roman-Catholic Church. A globe has been mounted to the top of the cross and indicates the time. The globe symbolises the earth as well as the descent and incarnation of the Son of God. Additionally, it symbolises the Resurrection of the Lord and eternal life. Two silver images have been incorporated into the base which represent the descent into Hell. Finally, the skull symbolises the victory over death and sin through the crucifixion of Christ. Second half 17th century, probably Regensburg Germany. H 32 cm (crucifix), H 35 cm (case).Schatting: 12000 - 15000 |
