Woody van Amen (1936)Woody van Amen (1936) Taxania I, II and III' all signed and dated 2007 (lower right) and signed and dated (on the backing) series of 3 watercolours, each 25x35,8 cm Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist, Rotterdam 2007. Exhibited: Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, 'Kunst uit huis V: collectie Ron Klein Breteler', 24.5 - 23.8.2009. In fifty years, Woody van Amen managed to establish a sensational career with his paintings, sculptures, installations and films. Van Amen received his breakthrough as front man of the Dutch Pop-Art, working in a style that would combine consumer icons and popular visual culture. During his residence in the United States, Van Amen met Pop-Art pioneers like Andy Warhol. His later work shows influences from his travels in Asia, in which he manages to bring together his interest in low culture and spirituality. In 1972 Van Amen published the manifest ‘Nieuwe Romantiek’, in which he turned against existing dogmas that influenced the content of art. Characteristics like the Swiss mountain Matterhorn and the self-invented form Taxat became recurring elements within his work. The coalescence of the expression of image and language, and the huge stratification cannot be summarized in simple words. Recognizable elements and attractive colours evoke feelings of recognition, but also confronts the viewer with the question how the image is related to its meaning. Florette Dijkstra looks for the ‘empty spaces’ in art history. Alongside numerous multi-annual projects, she has created drawings surrounding themes of visual art and literature, including a series on the reflection of man. The works explore that which precedes the creation of a work of art, and that which follows it. Dijkstra sometimes spends years travelling in the footsteps of forgotten characters, narrating her quests in drawings and text. (Source: website De KetelFactory, Schiedam)Schatting: 400 - 600 |

Otto Egberts (1949)Otto Egberts (1949) Schaamstreken I-IV' all signed and dated 2000 in pencil (on the endpapers) four artist's books with drawings, two with 11 and two with 15 double pages, bound in goat leather, each 40x11x2 cm Provenance: Galerie Phoebus, Rotterdam, acquired in 2000. The work of Rotterdam-based artist Otto Egberts deals with a constant doubt about the meaning of existence. His drawings depict fleshy masses, deformed body parts or introverted figures with expressionless faces in oppressive spaces. Titles such as ‘Execution’ and ‘Disease in Paradise’ emphasise the macabre heart of Egberts’ oeuvre. Egberts describes his work as a ‘solidified extension of my hands’. He translates the images in his mind into charcoal drawings on thick wrapping paper. For him, drawing is a search for the meaning of ‘being’ and an attempt to bridge the gap between body and mind. He thus strives to reconcile his inner experiences with the physical reality that surrounds him. (Source: website Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam)Schatting: 500 - 700 |

Jan Fabre (1958)Jan Fabre (1958) Het graf van de onbekende computer' 4 c-prints mounted on foam board, from an edition of 40, each 50x50 cm Provenance: Deweer Gallery, Otegem, acquired in 2000. Exhibited: Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, 'Kunst uit huis V: collectie Ron Klein Breteler', 24.5 - 23.8.2009. Jan Fabre’s work cannot be pigeonholed because it is inextinguishable, exploring all the areas of art’s intermediary role (theatre, opera, video, choreography, performance, drawings, installations). In pursuing his burning quest for beauty and freedom, Jan Fabre does not wish to reveal the labyrinth of his art. He is an exacting man, who allows you to journey towards his imaginary realm, but offers no keys to reading his marvellous world. The installation of small blue crosses, carefully arranged using the model of military cemeteries is a moving allusion to the parallel fate of insects and people. On each one of the crosses is carved the Flemish name for a family of insects, a metaphor of the fate of the common man. Like some anonymous, vulnerable shield, ontologically associated with sacrifice, he champions the ideologies and philosophies of a social life that is ordered, hierarchical, violent, cruel and cannibalistic. In the collective unconscious, the insect is the pariah, the creature that is unworthy of divine creation, and yet the oldest living being on the planet. It is the living, seething evidence of our most primitive and bellicose instincts. Fabre chooses the marvellous to describe the abjectness of our desires and senses. From the beginning, elementary research has characterized Ewerdt Hilgemann’s work. After experiments with subtle, white wooden wall pieces catching light in the 1960s, he turned into a conceptual sculptor, using natural stone, as well as steel, geometrical shapes in series: positive versus negative. In 1980 he introduced randomness and natural powers beyond his control into his working method. Much to his surprise, he found that also the unpredictable is subject to natural laws, to which he soon could adapt and anticipate. (Source: Artist’s website)Schatting: 200 - 300 |

Antti Laitinen (1975)Antti Laitinen (1975) My Island III' (2007) c-type mounted on dibond, number 3 from an edition of 6, 115x115 cm Provenance: Nettie Horn Gallery, London, acquired in 2010. In his series, ‘It’s My Island’, Laitinen builds his own island in the Baltic Sea by dragging two hundred sand bags into the water over a period of three months - using nothing but a spade, sand and sacks. In this repetitive and idiosyncratically absurd performance, Laitinen explores notions of nationality - building his own independent micro-nation inhabited by a single citizen - and questions fundamental issues of citizenship and identity. When the island is built, Laitinen then carefully documents it in a series of large-scale photographs which are noble representations of the beautiful and romantic landscape which is so present in Laitinen’s work. Each photograph revealing different aspects of nature’s emotional influence on the landscape – from a calm and idyllic setting to a foreboding stormy seascape. Ton van Kints (1955)Ton van Kints (1955) Koekoeksnest gepolderd zwart 2' artist's stamp, dated 6/3/09 and titled (on the reverse) epoxy resin, paint, staples and board, 99x101 cm Provenance: Galerie Ramakers, The Hague, acquired in 2009. The ‘Cuckoo’s Nest’ series takes loosely sawn circles as its point of departure, out of which a second, inner circle has been cut. Van Kints tucks the resulting ‘egg’ back into the negative space it came from, but the wrong way around – like a Cuckoo invading another bird’s nest to have its own eggs nursed to term. The result is fragile and poignant, especially when Van Kints uses force to jam the Cuckoo eggs into position. A friction results that the onlooker can feel in his own body. Occasionally, Van Kints eases the tension by trimming the edges of an egg and ‘puzzling’ the bits back together again. He calls these ‘Poldered Cuckoo’s Nests’, a reference to the Dutch compulsion to smooth away and juggle problems until the slightest unevenness or tension has been removed, as if contradictions had never existed. Ossip (1952)Ossip (1952) Untitled (study no. 35) signed and dated 17-7-02 on the base mixed media, 35x24x8 cm Provenance: Galerie Ramakers, The Hague, acquired in 2002. Exhibited: Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, 'Kunst uit huis V: collectie Ron Klein Breteler', 24.5 - 23.8.2009. Literature: Dick Raaijmakers, J.L. Locher, ‘Ossip’, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, The Hague 1996, illus. in colour. Ossip uses old photographs taken from medical books or faded newspapers and magazines, often dating back to the early twentieth century. He is interested in the images themselves, not their context. The pictures are astonishing, partly because they often show people with physical abnormalities and partly (as when they show classic beauties of the past) because they are removed from their original historical context. Ossip enlarges these isolated images and manipulates them to place them in today’s world. The original image is still there but its meaning is changed. He restores three-dimensionality by stretching strings or wire around it or adding animal bones or fragments of cloth. In this way, emphases are imposed and powerful images are created. Ossip’s procedure conjures up a completely different world, in which viewers are free to endow the new images with whatever significance they choose. Ossip works by association; the texts he places on the works may bear some relationship to them, but then again they may not. His unorthodox working methods are not based on any ideology or art historical style. He aims to avoid any kind of accompanying rhetoric, believing that art should be left to speak for itself. The resulting work is intriguing, often oppressive, challenging and thoroughly thought-provoking. (Source: Website Gemeentemuseum, Ossip exhibition)Schatting: 1200 - 1800 |

Hans Op de Beeck (1969)Hans Op de Beeck (1969) Room' (2012) Lambda print mounted on dibond, number 2 from an edition of 5, 110x180 cm Provenance: Galerie Ron Mandos, Amsterdam, acquired in 2013. Hans Op de Beeck produces large installations, sculptures, films, drawings, paintings, photographs and texts. His work is a reflection on our complex society and the universal questions of meaning and mortality that resonate within it. He regards man as a being who stages the world around him in a tragi-comic way. Above all, Op de Beeck is keen to stimulate the viewers’ senses, and invite them to really experience the image. He seeks to create a form of visual fiction that delivers a moment of wonder, silence and introspection. In his ongoing ‘Room’ series of large black-and-white pictures, the artist concentrates on the loss of self, moments in which a person in an interior slips into a state of mental absence. Every picture features only one protagonist, each of whom is presented in completely different surroundings. The interiors provide information about the presumed life and social background of the person portrayed, as well as about the specific moment and the stage of life that the individual has reached. This series of images in photographic form is more closely related to the traditional art of painting than to photography, as each of the interiors has sprung from the artist's imagination. These are non-existent interiors designed entirely by computer with a realism that appears photographic in quality. The framing of the picture alludes to the classic paintings of artists including the Flemish Primitives, employing a central perspective, a 'naïve' construction with a single central vanishing point. This precise perspective reinforces the invitation to the viewer to enter mentally into the space. The artist has incorporated characters (actors) into these virtual spaces, dressing and directing them in an empty photographic studio. The characters and the setting are then brought together on the computer screen. Each of the characters, no matter how different in appearance, has the same calm, introspective gaze, alluding to Old Masters such as Rogier van der Weyden. The presence of a window or aperture in a side or rear wall, an opening to the world outside, is a further connection to the traditional painting of that period. However, this series also clearly refers to movies, in particular the film noir, in the use of a cinematographic, black-and-white wide-screen image and a cast of actors. The focus is on one actor in a still, artificial, often implicitly threatening setting. The artificial nature of the setting is never denied in these obviously constructed images, another factor that is closely related to traditional painting. Auke de Vries (1937)Auke de Vries (1937) Sketches for Maasbeeld (1983) 2 pencil and fineliner drawings on (tracing) paper, framed together, each 21x29,5 cm Provenance: Nouvelles Images, The Hague. Exhibited: Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, 'Kunst uit huis V: collectie Ron Klein Breteler', 24.5 - 23.8.2009. Measuring 182 metres in length the Maas Sculpture is an immense art work, but viewed against the vast scale of the Willemsbrug it appears to be a modest and playful arabesque. It is autonomous yet tailored to its site, like Auke de Vries’ other sculpture in the city at the Netherlands Architecture Institute. The history of the Maas Sculpture began when De Vries was asked for his advice about placing an art work alongside the Willemsbrug. There followed a long discussion about the embankments, water, space and urban quality. De Vries did not initially participate in the open competition to design a work of art for the bridge. But when he was invited to submit a proposal and was allowed a year to conceive his plan, he agreed. (Source: oud.sculptureinternationalrotterdam.nl/) The forces of nature do their work: the ‘washing line’, as the sculpture quickly became known in Rotterdam, sags, the transverse beams and rods pull it sideways, the steel balls dangle from the strong steel cable. The sculpture links the Willemsbrug with a leftover pier from the now dismantled railway bridge. The sculpture draws its power from the interplay between the river, the bridge and the embankment.Schatting: 500 - 700 |
